This web site informs about my activities in the field of democracy promotion and education for democracy.
I managed a European Union project, in co-operation with an American counterpart, to institutionalise education for democracy in Ukraine.
Another part of my activities focused on “ European Citizenship”, the promotion of citizen awareness of and participation in the European integration-process (voter education for the elections of the European Parliament and the referenda in the ratification process of the EU Constitution).
I was involved in a research project of the European Commission to establish the European dimension of Socrates, Leonardo and Youth for Europe programmes. He ran projects, lectured and trained in the European Union and in Central and Eastern European countries.
I participated in the Council of Europe project “Education for Democratic Citizenship”. For 10 years I published the quarterly newsletter of the POLITEIA, Network for Citizenship and Democracy in Europe.
Until 2008 I co-ordinated the international activities of the National Academy for Public Administration, the training institute for Dutch local and regional civil servants.
I participate in the research network established by the European Commission to develop indicators for Active Citizenship for Democracy.
I am a member of the Steering Committee of the worldwide education for democracy network CIVITAS International and I am a member of the board of editors of the Journal for Social Studies Education.
With a colleague from Groningen University I published and presented workshops about citizenship education in the Netherlands in the course of 2008 and 2009
The brochure 'Citizenship Education Across the Border' (Maatschappijleer over de grens) is available from Instituut voor Publiek en Politiek; it describes how education for democracy is organized in nine countries.
